                                                                                                    for

                                                                                        „PLASTIC TARGETS“

                                                                        (soft targets, penetrable, material Polymer)

Manufacturer: Fa. Baumann & Tremml Plastik, Lindenhöhe 5, 94239 Ruhmannsfelden

                  Notes:

Sports manual/rules of the "BUND DEUTSCHER SPORTSCHÜTZEN E.V. (BDS)“, here part 3, IPSC shooting

(International Practical Shooting Confederation). This kind of shooting has emerged as a sports shooting

discipline during the last few years with more and more fans worldwide.

By BDS this shooting discipline has increased in popularity very much in Germany, but it also makes

great demands on the ability of the shooter. Therefore the BDS needs confirmation of all interested

shooters about their individual shooting ability and their knowledge of the appropriate rules Panes of

paperboard, clay pigeons e.g. are the mostly used targets for BDS-IPSC shootings (penetrable),

and moreover targets made of metal (steel plates).

The BDS-IPSC pane (paperboard) is the standard pane to be used in national matches –

a stylized torso with assessment zones/fields, which can be used as one whole pane or only partial.

Most of the metal targets are the so-named “Plattes” (round plates, diameter 20 cm) and

“Pepper Popper” (similar form like the DSB-duel plate), 28” and 4T1. Those targets are stored both

freestanding, loose in holders or hinged in frame joints/links. The targets certainly need to be knocked

over by a hit of a bullet, shot with a weapon with given minor factor.

The above mentioned metal targets need to be positioned straight (maximum distance 1 m) in front

of the bullet keeper of the shooting stand. Otherwise an additional bullet keeper behind the metal

target is necessary. Moreover a circular  protection device has to be mounted around these targets

to retain ricochets and fragments of the bullets after impact on the metal targets.

Those devices have to be mounted according to the “guidelines for installation, acceptance and

operation of shooting stands” (shooting stand guidelines).

Otherwise ricochets and fragmentation could be the result, which can be very dangerous for the

shooters. Moreover the shooting stand’s furnishings could be damaged.

The „PLASTIC TARGETS“, developed and produced by Baumann & Tremml offer the following advantages

                  over metal targets:

                  Expertises:

They have different forms, are stored freestanding or in hinges and are positioned straight in front of

the bullet keeper of the shooting stand or in the shooting stand with an additional bullet keeper. The

targets tumble over as soon as they are fired at or rather hit. The “PLASTIC TARGETS” are penetrated

and the bullets don’t fragment at the surface anymore as in the case of metal targets. A circular splitter

                  protection device is not necessary.

The minimum difference between shooter and target in IPSC shooting is 7 m for “short weapons” (pistols

and guns) and 10 m for metal targets. Shot guns: Difference to the target at least 10 m (standard)!

Therefore „PLASTIC TARGETS“ can be used as penetrable targets at shooting venues which are licensed

for IPSC shooting (more distance shooting stands).

Attention: Notifications enacted by the responsible authorising agency (“Authorisation for the operation

of a shooting establishment”) and the appropriate licensing requirements and orders are not concerned

hereof. In spite of the quite soft material these „PLASTIC TARGETS“ own the necessary

consistency/rigidity  because of an adequate material thickness.

This could even be increased once again by a strengthening of the reverse.

                      Durability/capacitance of the „PLASTIC TARGETS“:

The following advantage of the used material has to be pointed out: The impact holes retract to a

minimum depending on the calibre. Under fire with calibre 9 mm Para, FMJ, bullet weight 8,0 g,

die shot holes almost close totally, also under fire with calibre .45 ACP, FMJ, weight 14,9 g. When

using rivals – here a gun with calibre 12/70 with slugs, the shot holes have a maximum size of 5 mm, but

there remain cracks at the backside of the material.

The durability is approximately 1,500 to 2,000 hits for the mentioned short weapon calibres (9 nun Para,

.45 ACP), for round nose bullets with calibre .357 Magnum approximately 1,000 to 1,200 hits.

The mentioned Rival: The durability depends on the density of hits, approximately 80 to 100 hits.

„PLASTIC TARGETS“ Under fire with short weapons (distance 20 to 5 m) or shot guns (distance 20 to

10 m): Ricochets and Fragments of the bullets couldn’t be observed.

The form of the bullet is the crucial factor for the durability of the material. The maximum durability of

the „PLASTIC TARGETS“ can be reached by using FMJ  and lead round nose bullets.

                      Summary:

„PLASTIC TARGETS“ can be categorised as „penetrable targets“, because the bullets bleed through. They

cause no risk of rebounds/explosions of the bullets and resulting injuries of shooters or damages of the

shooting stand’s furnishings  by rebounding bullets or partial bullets. The used material guarantees a

durability/capacitance of the targets of up to 2,000 shots – depending on calibre and used form of the

bullet. The „PLASTIC TARGETS“ are not only suitable for IPSC shooting, they are moreover also interesting

for other disciplines of shooting sports and matches and add to a varied arrangement of shooting

                  sports events.
